Aspicilia epiglypta (Norrl. ex Nyl.) Hue

Description

     Thallus crustose, rimose, areolate, irregular areoles up to 1-1.5 mm diam., rounded-warted, pale-grey with a yellow-fawn brown tinge. beige, prothallus blackish. Apothecia 2-5 per areole, irregular, initially immersed, later prominent, rounded, 0,3-0,5 mm diam., disc rough, plane, dark matt; thalline exciple raised, thick, angular-indented or convoluted. Ascospores simple, ellipsoid,  20-25 x 12-15 µm, conidiospores (pycnidiospores) 15-28 x 1 µm. Photobiont: Chlorococcales. Thallus : C-, K+ red, Pd+ yellow-orange. On granitic and schists rocks, near the seashore and nitrogen-rich. This species belongs to the group of Aspicilia cinerea (K+ red and Pd+ orange) that encompasses several species very difficult to distinguish except by well ripen ascospores size and the conidia size (at spring !): Aspicilia cinerea s.str. ; Aspicilia intermutans ; Aspicilia epiglypta ; Aspicilia cupreogrisea. These conditions could not be satisfied in our case, and here we provide identification with usual restrictions. N.B. Specimen presented here were identified by Belgium authors under this name. Not to be confused with fertile forms of Pertusaria pseudocorallina that are isidiate and with even apothecia.*
