Ochrolechia turneri (Sm.) Hasselrot Cf.

Synonyms:

Family: OCHROLECHIACEAE

Habitat: Montane

Description

Thallus not very thick, more or less tubercular, greyish if dry, greenish gray if wet, hypothallus sometimes present, paler, covered with whitish soralia if dry, yellowish green if wet, up to 5 mm in diameter, sometimes in line or excavated , which can meet at the top of warts in granular soredia giving the impression of coralloid isidia. Apothecia sparse, sessile, 2-3 mm in diameter, disc concave to plane, pale yellowish, pale pinkish-brown, margin more or less crenate and sorediate, whitish. Spores still immature. Soralies: C + pale yellow to yellow, K-, KC + pale yellow to pale orange; medulla: C-, P-, UV + weak orange., apothecia disc: C + red. Species with mountain affinities coming mainly on the bark of well-lit trees, rarely on siliceous rocks.

Ochrolechia microstictoides is very similar but has leprous confluent soralia, but in practice this species can only be distinguished with certainty from Ochrolechia turneri by full chemical analysis, which is why we present this species here with Cf.

N.B. Lepra (Pertusaria) albescens s.l. may have a similar appearance but its soralia are larger, sharper and more numerous and initially look like coralloid isidia, they are C-. and KC-.
