Description
      Thallus foliose arranged in a turf formed by lobes in strips, divided, erect 2-6 cm high and 3-10 mm wide, a little canaliculate, especially towards their base, bordered by small spinules or stiff hairs, upper surface shiny, warm brown, reddish brown (especially towards the base) or these colors are mixed giving the impression of autumn leaves in dry weather; greenish-brown, olive-brown, greenish in humid weather (especially near the top); underside with large, roughly oval, white pseudocyphellae. Apothecia very rare, at the apex of the lobes, 5-10 mm in diameter, flat disc, reddish-brown, thin concolorous margin, lined with spinules. Spores simple, 8-10 x 3-4 µm. Photobiont; chlorococcoïde. C-, K-, KC-, P + red a little orange. Boreal species (or alpine in France) coming to the ground in lawns among bryophytes or other species of lichens.
 
N.B. A species very similar to Cetraria ericetorum which is distinguished (sometimes with difficulty!) by its narrower lobes, strongly channeled and almost tubular, its more marginal pseudocyphelles, its more brownish and very rarely greenish colors and its P- reaction.
 
N.B. Edible species (after blanching in boiling water) but above all known as a herbal medicine because of its numerous pharmacological properties.
