Description

       Thallus 3-8 cm in its greatest length, formed by the union of several single squamules in the form of cups with raised edges, sinuous and wavy of 1-3 cm in diameter, upper surface pruinose and even chapped, greenish in wet weather , pale greyish a little greenish in dry weather, greyish underside not veined with rare rhizines. Presence of cephalodia external to Nostoc, greyish all around the apothecia, being able, by spreading out, to form a pseudo thallus all around the squamules. Apothecia usually single, set at the bottom of the cup formed by the squamule, round or oval, flat to concave disc, brown then dark brown. Utriform asci with 2 spores. Dark brown spores with a very rough surface,1-septate which gives them a "ball of wool" appearance, 60-105 x 25-45 µm according to the literature, 55-90 x 28-42 µm according to our measurements. Photosymbionts: Coccomyxa and cyanobacteria: Nostoc. Mountain and alpine species coming to limestone soils covered with snow in winter.
