Peltigera hymenina (Ach.) Delise

Synonyms:

Family: PELTIGERACEAE

Habitat: Ubiquitous

Description

Thallus foliose, to 15 cm across, lobes up to 1-2 cm wide and more or less erect, margin not pleated, upper surface smooth and not farinose, slightly glossy, greyish, grey-brownish when dry, green-olivaceous, green-bluish when moist, lower surface cream to very pale brown with inconspicuous pale brown or ochre veins and rhizines, pale, simple, tips brush-like. Apothecia abundant, saddle-shaped (resembling varnished nails), 5 x 3 mm, located at lobe margins, pale brown to brown-red. Ascospores elongate-oblong, 3-7-septate, 50-80 x 4-5 µm. C+/- red. This species is not especially maritime, grows on humid dunes and apparently seems to be a relic of the past primeval forest. See  Peltigera polydactylon  more scarce and more forest-dwelling and of which apothecia are more brown-red, located at raised finger-like thallus excressences (looking as fingers with varnished nails).*
