Cladonia strepsilis (Ach.) Grognot

Synonyms:

Family: CLADONIACEAE

Habitat: Ubiquitous

Description

Basal squamules upt to 5-10 mm long, rather thick, apices indented, clustered in dense tufts, very seldom sorediate, upper surface slightly "snowy" due to minute whitish spots, notably at squamule apices, bronze-green, green-brown tinged orange, old squamules more greyish, lower surface white-cream. Podetia very rare, short (< 1 cm), irregular, corticate, squamulose, edged with irregular lobes and flower-like. Apothecia very rare, at scyphi margin, brown. Pycnidia frequent, black. Photobiont: trebouxioid. C+ bright emerald-green, K-, Pd+ yellow. Rare, on well-lit acid coastal heathlands, often in cracks of rocks but also on inland heathlands.

N.B. Resembles to Cladonia foliacea, Cladonia firma,  Cladonia cervicornis subsp. cervicornis and particularly to Cladonia subcervicornis but different by the green C+ reaction and also by the thicker squamules. This reaction is seldom done in the field and this species probably is underestimated in our prospection area.*
