Physcia tenella (Scop.) DC. forme corticole.

Description

   Species very similar to Physcia adscendens but differing:

_ By the ends of the lobes which are not folded up into a hood and which simply bear cream soredia forming like lips (labriforms).

_ By his sometimes fewer cilia.

_ Apothecia 1-2 mm in diameter, more frequent (but remaining rare!) disc blackish, blackish brown and pruinose. This fairly nitrophilic species is common on tree bark, even in towns because it supports pollution.

 

N.B. Physcia tenella s. l. is often very difficult to distinguish from Physcia adscendens and is sometimes considered identical by some authors and there appear to be "mixed" forms.

 

The bark form is the most common, but we can distinguish some forms:

 

_Physcia tenella forme maritime = Physcia tenella var. marina which is a taxon considered as a subsp., a variety or a morphological form according to the authors, it occurs on the rocks or the walls in edge of the sea. This taxon has a thallus in rosette smaller than the type, it is also darker gray in dry weather and has darker gray-brown marginal cilia.

 

_Physcia tenella forme saxicole that occure on the rocks.

 

_Physcia tenella forme ramicole which grows on the twigs of more or less isolated trees with good sunlight and which is often fertile.

 

Physcia tenella forme sur substrat artificiel that comes on the wrecks of plastic boats, often well developed and fertile.
