Peltigera praetextata (Flörke ex Sommerf.) Zopf.

    Thallus foliose, to 15-25 cm diam., made of lobes 1.5-2 cm wide and 4-6 cm long, tips rounded, upper surface slightly bullate and delicately tomentose, greyish, grey-brownish, grey-olive, typically with overlapping clusters of grey-brownish schizidia along margins or fracture lines on surface, lower surface blackish towards the center, paler to whitish towards the margins, with flattened veins and rhizines simple and not confluent. Apothecia scarce, elongate, saddle-shaped, folded, red-orange, brown-orange. Ascospores markedly elongate, 3-septate, 35-58 x 2,5-5 µm (according to our observations, mean : 45-47 x 3-5 µm). Chemical spot tests negative. On mossy grounds and trees in woodlands characterized by a steady humidity level. Differs from Peltigera membranacea only by its clusters of schizidia and easily confused with it when schizidia are scarce -circumstances frequently observed, see carefully the thallus center-  and intermediate specimen might be found.*
