Parmelina quercina (Willd.) Hale

Synonyms:

Family: PARMELIACEAE

Habitat: Mediterranean

Description

Thallus, rosette-forming, 5-15 cm diam., lobes more or less imbricate, short, 5-10 mm wide, tips rounded and slightly crenulate, upper surface glossy, often wrinkled and even cerebroid toward the center, grey-bluish-greenish when moist, plale grey-blue when dry, white macula absent, lower surface blackish with short and matt rhizines. Apothecia frequent, 3-6 mm diam., sessile, lower surface rhizinate, disc greenish tinged brown-red when moist and young, brown-red when dry and mature, exciple thick. Ascospores simple, very broadly ellipsoid, 8-11 x 5-7 µm. Cortex: K+ yellow; medulla: C+ red, K-, KC+ red, Pd-. Thermophilic trends, on more or less isolated or in sparse forests. Recently Parmelina carporrhizans has been isolated from specimen assigned to this species. It differs by small white macula on the upper surface of lobes, but this differentiation is sometimes difficult to operate on the sole macroscopic criteria. The distribution of this species requires reappraisal.*
