Mycobilimbia sphaeroides (Dicks.) S. Ekman & Printzen

    Thallus thin and more or less dispersed on its substratum, formed of fine granules 25-70 µm in diameter resembling soredia (but which are not), dull and not shiny, green, grey-green. Apothecia 0.5-1 mm in diameter, sessile, convex with a paler margin inconspicuous and rapidly disappearing, very quickly globose light pinkish-brown, buff, ochre. Colorless spores, elliptical to fusiform, usually 1-septate (very rarely 3- septate) (or better: spores two-celled of sometimes unequal size cells triangular in appearance), 11-14 (17) x 4-4.5 (5) µm according to literature, 13-17 x 5-6 µm according to our measurements. No characteristic color chemical reactions. Species found at the base of mossy trees in old humid woodlands, more rarely on damp rocks or heather.

Cf. Lecania chlorotiza and Lecania cyrtella which have smaller apothecia and narrower spores.
