Description

     Thallus shrubby, forming densely branched, dark cushions, 2-8 cm high; more or less erected, branches circular section 0.2-0.7 mm diam., occasionally compressed towards base ; lateral spinules 1-5 mm in length, numerous, arising at right angles from main stems, surface shiny, blunt, basal branches black or brownish black, the apices olive-brown to grey-brown. Apothecia absent, soralia absent. Photobiont : trebouxioide. Cortex : C-, K-, KC-, Pd-, medullae : Pd+ red. Rare and decreasing ; amongst mosses, sometimes on rock in hilly areas.*
