Lecanora confusa  Almb.

Synonyms:

Family: LECANORACEAE

Habitat: Oceanic zone

Description

Thallus crustose, 1-3 cm across, usually forming oval patches, main axes in the wood fibers direction, granular to areolate, areoles scaly, wrinkled and more or less complex, pale grey-greenish, very pale beige, pale yellow-ochraceous, prothallus absent or indeterminate. Apothecia scarce, slightly sessile, 0.4-0.8 mm diam., disc concave then flat to slightly convex, pale yellow-greenish, pale beige-pink, pale fawn, sometimes brownish when old, exciple more or less crenulate or minutely granular, not sorediate, paler or pale yellow, persistent, but sometimes restricted to a few granules when old. Ascospores simple, colourless, ellipsoid, 10-14 x 4-5 µm. Photobiont: Trebouxia. Thallus: C+ orange, K +/- yellow, KC+ orange, Pd-, UV+ yellow-green. Strong maritime trends, preferentially on slightly enriched substrata and in our prospecion area on trunks or branches of trees near the seashore, in oceanic woodlands common on worked wood, poles, benches, fences, et. and other wood equipments near the seashore, see: Lecanora confusa forme lignicole : rarer (and going unnoticed by its small size) on the scales of coniferous cones: Lecanora confusa forme sur cônes de conifères.

N.B. A very similar species (and sometimes synonymized by some authors) of Lecanora strobilina which is very sorediate and K + yellow, KC + yellow, C-, P- but there seem to be "embarrassing" intermediaries.

N.B. On worked wood, not to be confused with Lecanora varia that may grow together but with a paler thallus, abundant and crowded apothecia with a more grainy margin and C- and P + yellow.

N.B. Not to be confused with Lecanora symmicta which, at a glance, is rather similar  in colour, also common on worked wood but with larger, very crowded apothecia and usually absent exciple (chemical reactions negative or seldom C+/- orange).

N.B. Not to be confused with Lecanora saligna which also is common on wood but with more greenish or greyish thallus, apothecia discs brow-red and negative chemical reactions.

N.B. In addition, Lecanora zosterae may grow on worked wood near the seashore but its apothecia are much larger, markedly sessile and with negative chemical reactions.

N.B. Some forms with small apothecia of Myriolecis albescens may also be similar but they have a white thallus and are negative to the usual reagents.
