Arthonia endlicheri (Garov.) Oxner

Synonyms:

Family: ARTHONIACEAE

Habitat: Aerohaline zone

Description

Thallus crustose, more or less spread out, sometimes rosette shaped, 0.3-1 mm thick, tartareous, cracked, wrinckled, very uneven, often forming bullate ridges or lobe-like proliferations (like paste tooth), pink, ochre-pink tinged lilac when young in dry and well-lit environments, grey-lilac to greyish in more shadowed and humid places, turning pale brown-grey in the herbarium; margin appearence occasionally lobate, pale to dark brown, homogenous. Upper surface diplaying numerous soredia, 50-100 µm diam. with dense packed minute mounds and minute crystals in their center, brown-pink when young and later ochre-brown or pale brown-grey. Apothecia very rare, round to ovoid to long, 0.4 to 0.8 mm diam., angular edge, white-pruinose. Pycnidia inconspicuous, immersed in thallus hardly visible as small black dots of 100-120 µm diam.. Ascospores enlarged to the top, 3- to 5-septate, 14-20 x 5-7 µm. C+ red, K+ yellow or K- according to various authors (faint yellow according to our observations), KC+ red, Pd-. Photobiont : Trentepohlia. On siliceous rocks below dry, sheltered overhangs, especially from the xeric supralittoral to the aerohaline zones where its colour is markedly ochre-pink but also inland in large humid cracks of siliceous rocks where this species presents a more greyish thallus and soredia clusters ochrer. Overall aspect of Lepraria but not to be confused with rare morphs of Dirina massiliensis f. sorediata and in some cases only chemical tests can differentiate the two species (Arthonia endichleri does not show any erythrin), however Dirina massiliensis f. sorediata grows mostly on walls or more rarely on less acid siliceous rocks, with a thinner thallus, more pinky (presence of erythrin), with grey or grey-bluish, smaller soredia, and without pycnidia (might be difficult to observe on the field!). Species belonging to the Sclerophytetum circumscriptae frequently associated with Llimonea sorediata with black prothallus and Peterjamesia circumscripta but also to several forms of  Dirina massiliensis f. sorediata (see upper in the text).*
