Phaeographis smithii (Leighton) B. de Lesd.

    Thallus crustose, thin, smooth to minutey rough, slightly glossy , little or not cracked, cream, whitish tinged yellowish, pale grey yellowish, pale grey-greenish. Apothecia lirellate, immersed in the thallus, short, seldom branched or stellate, disc open at the base, flat, blackish but more or less covered with white pruine, exciple inconspicuous, carbonized layer not expanding below lirellae (main difference with Phaeographis dendritica). Ascospores brownish, narrowly fusiform, 6-8-septate, 25-35 x 6-9 µm. Thallus : C-, K+ yellow > red, KC+ red, Pd+ orange (slowly). On more or less smooth bark of trees in humid woodlands.

N.B. Differs from Phaeographis dendritica by its shorter lirella open at the base (in section), from Phaeographis inusta and Phaeographis lyellii  by its positive chemical spot tests.
