Description
     Persistent primary thallus formed of small scales of 1-4 mm with a smooth margin, grayish-green upper surface, brownish lower surface. Podetions scyphe-shaped 1-3 cm high, granular to warty surface, greenish gray but with a strong tendency to become dark grayish to blackish in old age (the medulla is blackish especially towards the base), sometimes squamulous especially towards the base, absence of soredia. Apothecia rare, at the margin of the cups, globose, pedunculated, 2-3 mm high, brown. Ascospores simple, elliptical. Pycnidia quite frequent. C+ yellow, K-, KC- or KC+/- yellow, K-, P+ red-orange, UV- or UV+ white. “Species” found on the acidic soils of moors along the sea.
 
N.B. "Species" of the Cladonia chlorophaea group variously interpreted by authors, some of whom make it a form of Cladonia grayi.
 
N.B. As chromatography has not been carried out, we present this species with the usual reservations.
