Lecanora hybocarpa auct. brit. non (Tuck.) Brodo
Lecanora hybocarpa auct. brit.
non (Tuck.) Brodo
Synonyms:
Lecanora sinuosa
Herk & Aproot ?
Family: LECANORACEAE
Habitat: Ubiquitous
Description
Thallus smooth to somewhat granular or warty, whitish, grayish-white, dirty white, white hypothallus often present and sometimes large.
Apothecia numerous (but generally fewer and less dense than
Lecanora chlarotera
s.l
.), scattered throughout the thallus, more or less sessile, 0.5-2 mm in diameter, flat disc, pale brown, orange-brown, brown-
pink, thin margin concolored to the thallus.
In a section of the apothecia presence in the rim of large angular crystals insoluble in KOH, a little yellow in polarized light, brownish epithecium with small crystals, soluble in KOH and insoluble in N, penetrating into the hymenium and between the paraphyses
(like roots!), a little yellow in polarized light.
Ascospores broadly elliptical, simple, hyaline, 10-13 x 6-7 µm according to the literature;
9-15 x 6-8 µm according to our measurements.
Thallus: C-, K+ yellow, KC+ +/- yellow, P-.
Species growing on the bark of trees in sunny situations, often with
Lecanora chlarotera
s.l
from which it was recently distinguished by British authors.
N.B. Very similar to
Lecanora chlarotera
s.l
and in practice separable from the latter species only by examining an apothecia section under a polarizing microscope.
N.B. Does not correspond to
Lecanora hybocarpa
(Tuck.) Brodo which would be an American species.
Cf.
Lecanora sinuosa
very similar and perhaps conspecific.
_ Pay attention to
Lecanora pulicaris
, which usually has an apothecia margin Pd+ orange-red.
