Parmeliella testacea P. M. Jorg.

Synonyms:

Family: PANNARIACEAE

Habitat: Oceanic zone

Description

Thallus foliose, rosette-shaped, 5-10 cm diam., loosely attached to the substratum, cracked, lobes indented, 2-3 (5) mm long, tips slightly larger, chestnut-brown, grey-brownish, matt, paler or concolourous knob-like or globose marginal soralia, extending from place to place on the entire surface to give rise to soredia, in small piles or crust-forming, grey-bluish, grey-greenish, hypothallus conspicuous, black, blue-black, distinctly visible in cracks but not at thallus edge. Apothecia very rare, 1-1.5 mm diam., disc flat, brownish, proper exciple paler and persistent. Ascospores simple, colourless, broadly ellipsoid, 16-20 x 9-10 µm. Photobiont: Nostoc. Chemical spot tests negative but some very fresh and humid specimen produce a faint 'pharmaceutical" smell. Rare, on mossy bark of deciduous trees in oceanic woodlands. See Parmeliella triptophylla with smaller squamules, more grey-olivaceous tinged with blue and with very numerous terete isidia, and also Fuscopannaria sampaiana of which soralia are cream-coloured.
