Ramalina subfarinacea (Nyl.) Nyl.

Synonyms:

Family: RAMALINACEAE

Habitat: Aerohaline zone

Description

Thallus like a little shrub, rising up or dangling at 3-5 cm height, arising from a a sole tendril-shaped base, made of numerous flattened branches, highly divided and with a lacerated aspect, with numerous digitate excrescences, grey-yellowish tinged green. Numerous soredia in excavate or pustulous whitish soralia on branches. Apothecia rare, laminal, 0.5-1 mm diam., disc flat, pale ochre-pink, exciple paler. Photobiont : Trebouxioid. Very variable species, for which several chemotypes occur, the most common being for the medulla K+ yellow > red (see Ramalina subfarinacea Chem K+ rouge, P+ jaune). Uncommon, on nutrient-rich (nitrogen) well-lit xeric-supralittoral vertical sections of rocks and cliffs, also on walls of exposed rocky ridges inland. Very similar to Ramalina farinacea of which the soredia are arranged as prominent farinose soralia, circular to oval, and not especially maritime or oceanic, but recent studies of molecular biology tend to prove that it is very similar if not conspecific Some forms are also very similar to Ramalina portuensis but this latter shows sorelia originating from cracks in the cortex.
