Hypotrachyna taylorensis (M.E. Mitch.) Hale forme saxicole.

     Foliose thallus arranged in a rosette, formed of lobes, and sometimes small leaflets, overlapping towards the center and fanning out towards the margin, all giving the appearance of waves on a beach, 2-5 mm wide, cut and sinuous with rounded apexes. Upper surface fragile with areas eroded by exfoliation, spotted with whitish, cortex grayish, bluish-gray, pale ash-gray, sometimes yellowish-gray for thalli exposed to seawater splashes, neither isidia nor soralia according to British authors (but with sometimes whitish laminal soralia according to French authors!) these soralia and isidia are replaced by schizidia concolorous to the thallus, fragile and leaving, upon rupture, whitish then brownish and finally blackish scars. Underside shiny, black with dichotomously branched rhizines. Very rare apothecia, 3-5 mm in diameter, brownish disc, crenate margin. Simple, hyaline, broadly elliptical spores, 9-14 x 6-10 µm. Photobiont: Trebouxia. Cortex: K+ yellow; medulla: C+ carmine pink, K-, KC+ carmine red, P-, UV+ bluish white. Uncommon species with oceanic tendencies, occurring mainly on rocks at the seaside among other foliose lichens and mosses.

Cf. Hypotrachyna britannica, which shares its habitat and has blue-grey soredia.
