Description
Thallus crustose, rather thick (0.3-0.5 mm thick), fissured and bordered, areoles shiny if not covered with bloom, sometimes of several colors;
brownish-gray, coppery-gray, coppery-brown in dry weather, more glaucous with greenish reflections in humid weather, sometimes bordered with a whitish relief line, sometimes in contact with other crustacean species a dark gray hypothalle.
Apothecia most often angular, 0.3-0.6 mm in diameter, disc blackish, not pruinose, margin fine and persistent.
Asci with 6-8 spores.
Spores broadly elliptical, simple, 30-32 x 14-16 µm.
Photobiont: green algae.
Cortex and medulla: C-, K + yellow then red, P + yellow.
Cacifuge, thermophilic and Mediterranean saxicole species.
Species very similar and perhaps conspecific to
Aspicilia cupreogrisea
which would be less thermophilic and more montane and whose apothecia disc is dark brown, also close and difficult to separate from
Aspicilia intermutans.
