Description
      Thallus formed of large squamules (up to 10 mm) with rounded ends, tight and entangled with each other, upper surface shiny, light brown, reddish-brown with wine-red areas, lower surface light brown , darker in the center, with rhizoid hyaline hyphae. Perithecia pyriforms submerged in the thallus and showing only a little blackish ostiole. Spores elliptical, simple, hyaline, 15-20 x 7.5-9.5 µm. Pycnidia sometimes numerous, marginal, subcylindrical pycnidioconidia, sometimes curved, 3-5 x 1.5-2 µm. Photobiont: green algae. No characteristic colored chemical reactions. Mediterranean species coming on sunny limestone rocks, most often in cracks, rarely on the ground. See Placidium squamulosum with less developed and less reddish scales and smaller spores.
