Description

Non-lichenized lichenicolous fungus.

 

       This lichenicolous fungus is noticeable on the apothecia of the host by the orifice of its submerged pycnidia, blackish and irregular, sometimes surrounded by a halo of dark brown hyphae, these pycnidia are globose and "onion-shaped", 50-120 µm in diameter and contain conidiogenous cells 6-12 x 2-3 µm, pale brown, subcylindrical, divided by several rings. Dark greyish-brown conidia, long elliptical with sometimes a truncated base, 1-septate, 4-7.5 x 2-3 µm according to the literature, 6-7 x 2.5-3 µm according to our measurements. Fairly rare species growing on the apothecia of species of the genera Lecanora and Caloplaca.

 

N.B. Recent works seem to demonstrate that Lichenodiplis lecanorae would be the anamorph of another species: Muellerella atricola = Muellerella lichenicola which would be its teleomorph.
