Xanthoparmelia sublaevis (Cout.) Hale

Thallus foliose arranged more or less in a rosette, well adherent to the substrate, 10-20 cm in diameter, formed of lobes with rounded ends and without (or few) narrow lobes in the center of the thallus, upper surface without macules, without soralia and without isidia, pale yellowish-gray, whitish-gray in dry weather, a little glaucous in humid weather, brownish underside, darker in the center, with simple rhizines. Apothecia frequent, sessile and somewhat pedunculated, 2-8 mm in diameter, brown disc, smooth margin concolorous to the thallus. Spores elliptical, simple, hyaline. Frequent pycnidia. Photobiont: green algae. Cortex: C-, K-, KC+/- yellow, P-; medulla: C-, K+ yellow then dark blood red, KC-, P+ orange. Mediterranean species, saxicolous with thermophilic and xerophilic tendencies growing on siliceous rocks.
N.B. Differs from Xanthoparmelia stenophylla s.l. by its more adherent thallus, without or with few small narrow lobes in the center and its upper surface without macules.
