Kuettlingeria neotaurica Cf. (Vondrák, Khados, Arup & Søchsting) I. V. Frolov, Vondrák & Arup) = Caloplaca neotaurica Vondrák, Khados, Arup & Søchsting

    Very thin crustose thallus, weakly areolate, grayish, brownish-gray, yellowish-gray, delimited by a grayish, dark gray hypothallus. Apothecia generally quite numerous, scattered throughout the thallus, 0.2-0.7 mm in diameter, flat disc, orange, rusty, orange-red, well-defined and swollen rim, sometimes slightly crenate, concolor or a little more clear. Epithecium orange-brown, K+ red. Elliptical, polarilocular spores, 14-17 x 7-11 µm and a thickening of 4-8 µm according to the literature, (10) 13-17 (20) x 5-9 (10) µm with a septum of 4-7 µm according to our measurements. Pycnidia black, K+ red and C+ purple around the ostiole. Photobiont: green algae. Thallus: C-, K+/- fleeting purple, KC-, P-; rim of apothecia and disc: C+ purple red, K+ red. Coastal saxicolous species of the mesic and xeric zone, found on acidic rocks and sometimes, but rarely, on decalcified limestone rocks (limestone shales).

N.B. Species of the group of Kuettlingeria fuscoatroides which can only be separated with certainty from the latter species by chemical analysis, we attribute it with the usual reservations to Kuettlingeria neotaurica because the latter species was found nearby.

N.B. Easy to confuse with Blastenia crenularia whose apothecia are redder and whose thalline edge is much more crenate and of which only the edge of the apothecia is C+ red.
