Cladonia arbuscula subsp. squarrosa (Wallr.) Ruoss.
Cladonia sylvatica ss. auct.
Differs from Cladonia arbuscula subsp. arbuscula by its branching mode, supposedly less frequent, its terminal branches rather long and overall, by the chemical spot tests: C-, K-, KC+ yellow, Pd+ red-rusty, UV-. Same habitat. This taxon can be confused with Cladonia arbuscula subsp. mitis which is: C-, K-, KC+ yellow, Pd- ou Pd+ redish; however both taxa might be identical since many intermediate specimen can be found. Can also be confused with Cladonia mediterranea.*
