Ascospores colourless, ellipsoid, simple, , 7-10 x 4-5 µm. Photobiont: Trebouxioid. Two chemotypes are known:
Pseudevernia furfuracea var. furfuracea: cortex : K+ yellow, medulla : C-, KC+ very pale red or KC-, Pd-. This variety usually is grey-greenish, notably when moist. Sometimes fertile.
Pseudevernia furfuracea var. ceratea (Ach.) D. Hawksw.: cortex : K+ yellow, medulla : C+ bright pink, KC+ red, Pd-. Usually grey-whitish. In our prospection area, fertile specimen have not been observed.
Montane, observed in our prospection area only in the Monts d'Arrée on trees, wod poles and less frequently on rocky ridges (Pseudevernia furfuracea var. ceratea forme saxicole).
